September Reads

Samantha Romine

Now, I am not the fastest reader in the world. I only read (on average) about 2 books a month.

This is for a few reasons:

1) I tend to reread chapters or scenes--for enjoyment or to fact check (I know this is annoying, but I do it anyway).

2) I savor language. There's no better feeling that lying down in a sentence and rolling around in it for a while.

3) I read every word in a novel and NEVER skim, and if I ever find myself starting to skim, I force myself to slow down so I don't miss anything. This is extremely odd, I know. It's even odd to me, but I can't help it. It's just how I choose to consume literature. Am I crazy? Most likely.

4) I don't have a lot of time to read. I really only read at nighttime, and some nights I'm so tired that I can't keep my eyes open. (The reason for this is because I most likely stayed up too late reading the night before. It's a vicious cycle.)

Completed September Books

Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, #4) by Jim Butcher

CAPTAIN'S FURY was a whole lot of fun! I've just discovered Jim Butcher, and I look forward to finishing his Codex Alera series (and moving on to his Dresden Files series). Jim Butcher has a very straightforward writing style that centers around a plot-driven narrative. You won't find flowery language in a Jim Butcher novel, but you will be taken on a wild and entertaining ride! I highly recommend him. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Black Sun (Between Earth and Sky, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse

I believe BLACK SUN actually releases tomorrow, October 13th. I had an advance reader's copy, and I was excited to read a book before its publication date. However, unfortunately, this book didn't do it for me. I won't get into specifics since I have no idea what changes were made to the novel before the final printing. Who knows, maybe the issues I had with the book were fixed.

I am definitely an outlier in my opinion of BLACK SUN. If you go to Goodreads and read reviews, the vast majority of people sing overwhelming praise for it, and that's great! After all, that's the wonderful thing about literature--everyone has different tastes and opinions, so there is a book out there for everyone! If you give it a read, I hope it's your next favorite book!

That's it. Those were the two books that I completed in September. I hope you enjoyed your September reads as well. Drop a comment if you would like to share. I would love to hear what you read!

Happy Reading,

Sam

I love your September Reads post. It makes me want to give fantasy a try. I really appreciate you describing your reading style. It makes me feel better to know that others go back and rereads chapters. I can't wait to see what you will be reading in October!
